Psychic medium John Edward discovered his ability to speak with the dead while trying to debunk the psychic who told him he was gifted.
“I knew I had the ability at the age of 15,” Edward says. “My grandmother and mother had psychics come to the house. One said she would only come to the house if I was there.
“I was like, ‘What? Why would she want to meet me?’ The woman came and there were 17 people there that day.
“She really knocked it out of the park with every reading that day,” he says. “I went up to debunk her and she told me she saw through my mom that I had this ability.”
Edward was stunned. Until that point, he had sided with his policeman father, not believing in psychic ability .
“This was not my thing, but she was very accurate,” Edward says. “Within six months, I had developed the ability. I had to change my home phone number because people were calling.”
Going to the local public library, Edward read everything he could on the paranormal and occult. “I developed through learning, through reading,” he says.
“I studied Carl Jung and metaphysical thought, as well. This was not like party tricks, gypsy fortune telling.
“I learned about astrology, numerology, and after I got done with the library, I went to the local bookstore,” Edward says. “I remember the day.”
As Edward walked into the store, the woman running the bookstore was in the middle, puttingbooks on shelves .
“As I walked to the back of the store, a deck of tarot cards fell off a shelf directly in front of me,” he says.
“She goes, ‘Well, I guess you’re supposed to buy those.’ I started working with cards and became very connected with them. Tarot was my first love, followed by psychometry, psychic self-defense and meditation.”
For the first few years, people sought Edward out for psychic readings.
“Then I started getting people on the other side,” he says.
“I’d say, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m apparently a medium as well. If I don’t get this done, they’re going to keep interrupting.’
“This one woman’s dad would not stop,” Edward says. “There was 15 minutes of him coming through.”
In 1998, Edward published his first book, “One Last Time.” In conjunction with the book’s release, he appeared on “Larry King Live.” There were so many phone calls, they overloaded the show’s switchboard.
From 1999 to 2004, Edward was the producer and host of the show “Crossing Over with John Edward.” Another show, “John Edward Cross Country,” aired on WETV until 2008..
On June 9, Edward will present a seminar at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront. Although he will conduct readings, not everyone who attends is guaranteed a reading.
When doing a reading, Edward says many things are going on at once. “They are thoughts, feelings, all happening at the same time,” he says.
“There are three things happening simultaneously and they superimposed. I call them ‘borrowed thoughts,’ because they’re not mine.”
When doing readings, Edward says it is his job to teach, not to reach people.
“Readings become teaching tools,” he says.
“If there are 100 people in the room and I can reach five, I can teach the other 95,” Edward says. “Even though it is not your family, we can all benefit from the experience. I have raised the awareness of 100 people.”
Edward did not experience the loss of a loved one until his mother died when he was 19. Doing readings for others helped him.
“I do hear from my mother, but not in the same way,” he says.
“I believe the afterlife is like the Internet. Where is the Internet? You can’t go there in a physical body; you have to have a conduit to go there.
“I’m kind of still in awe of the process,” Edward says. “I know I’m privileged to be able to do this. I’m not surprised by it, but am definitely in awe of how it unfolds.”
With a $150 admission price, the seminar isn’t for everyone, but Edward defends his high fee.
“It’s the way I weed people out,” he says.
“I want to make sure I don’t have people coming in to just check it out. Nobody’s checking it out at that price.
“If I charged $25 and there were 1,000 people in the room, I wouldn’t want that kind of energy,” Edward says. “I want the ones who are serious about being there.”
While he has true believers, Edward also must deal with many critics who doubt his ability and his motives. “My faith in God is unwavering,” he says. “I know what I’ve experienced and seen, and that’s enough for me.”
