It's a Long Island mystery, defying explanation even among those with the gift of second sight. Why is Long Island such a breeding ground for psychic mediums, and why do so many of them still call this place home?
"I think Long Island is a hotbed for mediums," jokes psychic Jeffrey Wands. "I usually tell people it's in the water."
He might be on to something. "On this little island, we're surrounded by water," says Kim Russo, Long Island's "Happy Medium." "This work that we do is all about energy . . . water helps us connect to the energy better."
You'll have the opportunity to ask the experts, as well as learn things about yourself and your dearly departed, as Long Island-bred spiritualists John Edward, Russo and Wands of WALK radio get ready to awe audiences with their otherworldly insights during upcoming appearances at several local haunts.
And you can also tune in to Theresa Caputo, currently showing off her special gifts on her own Hicksville-based reality show, "Long Island Medium," which airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on TLC.
What can fans expect in the presence of Edward, Russo and Wands?
Edward, who resides on Long Island, declined an interview. However, his representative said that the "Crossing Over" star's two-hour show May 7 at the Paramount in Huntington will include a session in which Edward will answer audience questions about "the world of energy and psychic phenomena and the afterlife."
Russo, who says she discovered an ability to see ghosts at the foot of her bed while growing up as a child in Queens, will "let the energy pull me around the theater" in her appearance Saturday night at The Space in Westbury. She'll interview not only her own "spirit guides" (that is, deceased loved ones), but also those of audience members. The "Happy Medium" tends to offer advice based on what the guides say. "I've told many people about their life's mission and that they are lagging behind and need to get on it," she says.
Wands, whose next date is May 5 at Domenico's in Levittown, says he'll draw energy and psychic cues from his audience. "I get bounced around the audience, and I get pulled to people. It's like being on a bungee cord," he explains in a telephone interview from Port Washington. He plans to speak with as many audience members as possible, "giving people closure" with information gleaned from the spirit world about how a relative died.
